The Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR) is an initiative of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA). The AOANJRR was established in 1999 becoming fully national in mid 2002. The purpose of the AOANJRR is to improve and maintain the quality of care for individuals receiving joint replacement surgery. Information on hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle and spinal disc replacement is collected from all hospitals in Australia undertaking joint replacement surgery.
The Commonwealth of Australia has declared the AOANJRR a Federal Quality Assurance Activity under part VC of the Health Insurance Act, 1973.
The AOANJRR is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care.

2023 Annual Report Released
The Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR) is proud to announce the release of the 2023 Hip, Knee and Shoulder Arthroplasty Annual Report, which provides a comprehensive analysis of joint replacement procedures in Australia. This marks the Registry's 24th Annual Report and continues our commitment to enhancing orthopaedic care through data-driven insights.
The 2023 report is based on the analysis of 1,982,200 joint replacement procedures, including 850,603 hip replacements, 1,046,247 knee replacements, and 85,350 shoulder replacements. These procedures were recorded by the Registry with a procedure date up to and including 31 December 2022.
The report provides insights into how the COVID-19 pandemic affected joint replacement surgery in 2022, comparing it to 2020, 2021, and the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
The report presents benchmarks for prostheses used in primary total conventional hip and knee replacements, with a focus on osteoarthritis. It also introduces 10-year benchmarks for total stemmed anatomic shoulder replacement and primary total stemmed reverse shoulder replacement for any diagnosis. Additionally, 20-year outcomes for select prostheses still in use are discussed.
The 2023 Annual Report includes a new chapter that delves into the outcomes of revision surgeries for infection following primary hip, knee, and shoulder replacement procedures. This chapter details the effect of infection on the revision outcomes of joint replacement surgery.
The AOANJRR identifies prostheses with higher than expected rates of revision. In the 2023 report, four total conventional hip prostheses, three total knee prostheses, and two total stemmed reverse shoulder prostheses have been newly identified.
